Watch: Billie Lourd Says Carrie Fisher “Lives on Through Joy” on 9th Anniversary of Mom’s Death
Billie Lourd is focusing on the happier aspects of her life.
Nine years after the death of her mother Carrie Fisher at the age of 60, the Adulthood actress reflected on how different grief can be from moment to moment, saying that with the help of her son Kingston, 5, and daughter Jackson, 3—whom she shares with husband Austen Rydell—she was able to see a happier side.
“I started thinking about how this joy wouldn’t be possible without my mom,” Billie wrote on Instagram Dec. 27 as she recounted watching her daughter run around with her father Bryan Lourd. “This joy only exists because she existed. So even though she is not physically part of this joy, she is part of the reason for it. Even though she is not alive she lives on through this joy.”
The 33-year-old explained that while her “grief takes on many shapes” on this anniversary, “that shape is this joy I get to experience watching my kids with my dad.”

However, as Billie noted, the grief “could and will change shapes multiple times throughout this day,” writing that “grief is never just one thing.”
“But right now I am relishing in this bittersweet grieful joy,” the Booksmart actress continued. “As my mom wisely said, ‘Nothing is ever really over. Just over there.’ My mombys life isnt really over. Just over there—in my kids and in this joy I’m able to experience because of her. Thank you momby. I will never stop missing you.”

Billie Lourd had a message about living and grieving on the anniversary of her mother’s death.
Her mom, actress and author Carrie Fisher, died December 27, 2016, at age 60.
“It has been 6 years since my Momby died (feels like 2 but also like 705 at the same time?),” Lourd wrote in an Instagram caption, which she posted alongside a childhood photo of herself with Fisher.
Lourd, who is also an actress, welcomed a second child earlier this month.
“Unlike most other years since she’s died, this year, these past two weeks have been some of the most joyful of my life,” Lourd continued. “Giving birth to my daughter and watching my son meet her have been two of the most magical moments I have ever experienced. But with the magic of life tends to come the reality of grief.”
Lourd said she wished her mother was around to experience her kids, but since she isn’t, she often shares stories about Fisher with them.
“My mom is not here to meet either of them and isn’t here to experience any of the magic. Sometimes the magical moments can also be the hardest,” she wrote. “That’s the thing about grief. I wish my Momby were here, but she isn’t. So all I can do is hold onto the magic harder, hug my kids a little tighter. Tell them a story about her. Share her favorite things with them. Tell them how much she would have loved them.”
Lourd and husband Austen Rydell are parents to their new daughter and a 2-year-old son.
She signed off explaining that if anyone reading the post is “experiencing the reality of grief alongside the magic of life, I see you. You are not alone. Don’t ignore either. Life can be magical and griefy at the same time.”
In 2016, Lourd also lost her grandmother Debbie Reynolds (Fisher’s mother), who died of a stroke one day after Fisher’s death.

Billie Lourd shared an emotional message on what would’ve been Carrie Fisher‘s birthday.
The Scream Queens actor paid tribute to her late mother sharing her process of grief.
“My mom would’ve been 68 today. Dead person birthdays are weird to say the least,” Lourd shared on Instagram. “On my mom’s birthday every year, I try to celebrate her as much as possible, but today I really wanted to celebrate her with her. Some years my grief makes me feel the warmth of her love, some years it makes me angry, some years I feel numb but today when I woke up I just felt sad. I didn’t want to celebrate, I just wanted my mom.”

“My mom died when she was 60,” she added. “60 is too damn young to die.”
She continued, “I then googled drug overdose deaths (another fun morning google!!!) and it is over 100 thousand people per year.”
Lourd opened up about helping her mother “get sober but sadly my mom couldn’t ever escape her addiction. But while she was alive she always shared the ups and downs of that struggle with others in hopes it would help them escape their own addiction.”
“As an addict, being open about the struggle is the only way through. And same goes for those of us affected by that struggle,” Lourd said. “Sending my love to anyone out there who has lost someone to drug addiction. You are not alone.”
